Trump government has launched Trump Accounts, under which eligible newborns receive a $1,000 seed investment into a market linked account. The thinking is simple: create investors from birth rather than waiting until adulthood.
Putting politics aside, the policy design is quite fascinating.
For decades, governments around the world have focused on financial inclusion through bank accounts. This takes the next step… financial participation through ownership of productive assets.
If a child starts life with an investment account, capital market participation becomes the default rather than something discovered much later in life.
India may be uniquely positioned to explore something similar. We have already built world class financial rails and inclusion project through Aadhaar, Jan Dhan, UPI, and the broader digital public infrastructure ecosystem.
Imagine a long term investing initiative linked to a mutual fund or market linked account, created at birth and nurtured over time. The amounts need not be large. The real impact would be cultural.
Over a generation, it could help deepen India’s capital market culture and create millions of first generation investors who grow up seeing investing as a natural part of life.
